Alpine strawberries (Fragaria vesca) how do you actually manage to harvest these things? I have plenty of white ones, but they never seem to turn red. Well, not that I have seen. They seem to go straight from white to overripe blackened mush without passing through the actual ripe for harvest stage. How do I manage to make that happen? Has anyone ( Read more... )

After controlling the aphid situation on my strawberry plant I have been watching it like a hawk, super paranoid for any other bugs/problems. And, sure enough, I have found something else concerned about:

I had to cover up my plants last night for what I think will be the last cold-spell of the year (it's not quite cold enough to be called a frost) but before I did I took a few pictures.

I'm in the US, zone 7.

And I think I may start some seeds this year, but I need to get cracking on it.

What are folks favorite online seed retailers?

I also need strawberry starts. Does anyone have recommendations for strawberry varieties that would do well in my zone? And places to get them?
